Abilene, Texas

“I know what I saw Chandler. It was a gun I tell you.” Samuel argued.

His fellow Ranger looked surprised. He stood up and started pacing. Joe Chandler was a mean fighter and Samuel’s best friend in the Rangers Division. They had been called to duty together several times and had fought side by side against Indians and Mexican bandits. As the towns around the Indian borders prospered, they were assigned to border towns to ensure general peace and safety of the residents. After the Texas State Police had been disbanded earlier that year, the Rangers had an added responsibility of the town’s internal safety. Samuel took this duty very seriously. The protection of the town’s residents was his responsibility. He couldn’t let this stranger harm the town’s people, no matter how beautiful she was.

“If that’s the case, then the gangs have found their way into Abilene as well. We need to warn the army.”

“Wait,” Samuel held his arm. He looked into Chandler’s eyes. “We need concrete proof. Just a gun won’t be enough to get her arrested.” Chandler nodded.

“Did you see if the gun had any markings? Or whether any bullets were used?” He quizzed. Samuel shook his head. He pulled his hat close to his face.

“I didn’t get a chance. She was in my home. I entered the room and saw the holster in her bag. And it was bulging. I very well couldn’t confront her there and then. I’d not be standing here if I did.” Samuel looked grim. His brain was telling him the circumstances of Susanna’s arrival were sketchy and suspicious, but his heart refused to believe it. He swallowed.

“What happened next?” Chandler asked.

“Well, I had no choice, I had to take her to the Pastor. He didn’t have space. I had to take her to Mrs. Schmidt. I took her through town.” Samuel recollected the whole experience. “I even told her there’s an Army Fort nearby. That had no impact on her at all. Knowing you’re going to raid a town close to the Army would have shaken me before.” He met Chandler’s eyes.

“You’re not the man you used to be, Davis. That criminal life is behind you. You’re a Ranger now.” Chandler put a hand on his shoulder.

“You’re right though. We need more evidence. And you can get it for us.” He looked straight at Samuel.

“But how?” Samuel’s brows were furrowed.

“Befriend her. Stay around her. Let her trust you. If she’s really a threat to the town, she’ll push you away. If not, you’ll know. Confide in her, let her know your story, especially your past. If she relates, then that’s a red flag.” Samuel’s eyes were hard. Talking about his past was a sore point. But he understood where Chandler was coming from. He pulled his hat in tighter.

“Well, she’s a novice, I’ll tell you that.” He smiled at Chandler, who looked at him in confusion.

“While we were walking in town,I tried to shake information out of her. I was even going to tell her about Texas Rangers, and what we did, to see if that got a reaction.
